How do I remove wing window glass without breaking?
Need to repair (re-attach) the wing window latch, it fell off. Need to remove the glass in order to reattach, but I have only taken out broken wings... This glass is in excellent cond.
Real carefully! The adhesive strip that is used to hold the glass gets stronger as it ages. It was originally activated by soaking in solvent, so you can try soaking it overnight in acetone or gasoline. It will likely take 2 people. I would lay a block of wood flat on the glass against the frame, then use another block of wood and hammer to tap against the first block while the second person holds the glass from moving (wearing gloves just in case the glass breaks) Start from the ends of the frame and work from both sides. Eventually it should start to separate. Once it does be careful not to bend or distort the frame.
Glass guys used to use a tool that looked like a heavy bent putty knife with a blunt edge and a hammer while the glass was held in a special vise or clamp. The bent end of the tool was laid flat against the glass, the handle was bent up to give hammer clearance. You might be able to hold the glass in a vise with rubber jaws. Be sure you are not putting pressure against the glass when driving off the frame. In the long run it might be easier to just break the glass and replace it with new.
