ALL OBS 7.3 PSD not the same!

I am finding out the hard way that there are minute yet signifigant differences between a 94 PSD and 97 PSD engine.

So far I've noticed the waterpump/thermostat, oil pump, pickup, oil pan and dip stick tube location.

Add other differences that you've noticed between the years!

FPR and fuel bowl are different. I think the earlier version is less troublesome.

on certain '97 models the crank was different and the block was different around the lifter galleys and valley thickness may have been in '97, but for sure in '99 the valley was thicker.. on the engines with the different crank the pistons would be different using a thicker intermediate ring thus a thicker groove in the piston. '94 and '95 model front covers were different which also means that the HPOP & HPOP gasket was different. the '95 HPOP has the anti drain back valve in the surface of the HPOP and the '96 and up was in the front cover. '94 and '95 front covers can be modded like this or a '96 and up front cover can be used on the early engines in order to use an HPOP w/ out the anti drain back in the pump. lots of little differences out there.

'94 and very early '95 have over flow bottles a regular radiator cap and all copper radiators.

'95-'97 have pressurized degas bottles and aluminum radiators with plastic tanks.

The filter pressure switch on the old one is on the back underneath. On the newer one it is on the side.

There is a good thread somewhere here with pictures of both showing the FPR differences.

Yes, the '94.5 - E'95 trucks can be fun with the differences.
Just be glad you don't have a E'99 truck, it's way worse...

Do you suppose the engine harness will plug in and work the same or should we strip the harness and swap it? the newer one is in much better shape.

I don't know of anything in the sensor dept that would be diff on any harness.

the harness can come out in one piece.
pull it and inspect it, rewrap it and installl.
If i had the patience, i would pull my harness just to clean it.

By "newer one" you mean a Super Duty? No they are different.
If you mean from a '95 - '97 they should be the same.

In my experience the only difference between the 94 and 97 engine harness is the connector for the oil temp sensor is different. So is the sensor. I just swapped mine and I just swapped over the sensor too and all is good.
