I have a 94 f150 with the e40od tranny,It shakes like crazy when i go thru the hills I have replace the shackles and transmission support. I have zeroed it down to either the tranny or the torque converter. Ne on have any ideas pleze let me know Im getting sick of this truck already!!!!!! I have over $600 in this truck and The shackles wren't a cake walk either..... I honestly think it's the overdrive going out, but I can't be sure.
My 92 model shifted terribly till I changed the tranny fluid and filter and used a bottle of lucas transmission fix when I refilled it. It still studders when going into OD sometimes but its alot smoother than before it might be better if I had changed the fluid in the torque converter.
I don't know what you've already checked, but could it be your driveshaft out of alignment or a bad U joint? my truck shuddered (not horribly so) when the U-Joint was getting worn out.
I adjusted the drive shaft to where it needs to be. it was out of alignmate. the u joints are realy tight... when im going thru the hills it will shimmy and shake. I'll let off the gasvand it goes in a lower gear then it's fine...I hate driving it on the highway because it's a real headache. at 55 it gets really bad and it refuses to speed up unless I eather put the pedal all the way to the floor or let off the gas. I'm thinking about changing the fluids again The tranny fluild has A small hit of a burnt smell to it but its completely full and it's driving half decent now, well atleast it's driving better than it was, A big concern i do have is it won't kick out of overdrive.
It just started to slip today... I have been driving it regardless of its problems, 1st and 2nd are fine, 3rd its ok, but when it hits 4th and overdrive it gets rough and the whole truck will shake....... I need another E40D and can't seem to locate one in my price range..... and in my area, I have been driving it around with a little over 450 pounds in the back.... I mite take that out and see if it makes a difference.
Well not i cant get it over 40mph, so im gonna go get a tranny tomorrow, can i swap a
e40d for a c-6 with out any issue? Im hopefully going to get get a tranny tomorrow.... sad thing is i have to drive it to pull a part to get my new trans.well ill let ya know how it goes
Swapping to the C-6 is going to cost you the same as rebuilding the E4OD. It isnt cheap. You probably are suffering a bad torque converter lock up clutch, which is common on the lock up clutch. Just replacing the torque converter is no guarantee that it will be good to go. You still have all the trash in the trans from the friction material coming off the torque converter clutch.
If you have to pull the trany yourself at a self serve yard and then go home and pull your own to install an unknown condition trany, then pull it again the next day or if your lucky next year because its bad. Why not just rebuild yours? The A40D is still a really good trans to have. If money is no object, then get a C6, and rebuild it before putting it in.
Good luck.
But I bet by the time you read this you already have taken some action.
Why a C-6, it is only a 3 speed and your fuel mileage would suffer big time not to mention drivability. I have to admit the E4OD is a bad tranny in the early years. I have rebuilt mine 4 times in 300K. Get a good trans shop to do it and put a shift kit and a good converter in it and forget about it. It should run you ~2K to rebuild it or at least that is what it cost me on my 4x4.
