92 F-350 dually

I have a question about the tranny on my F-350 1 ton dually. I just use for a work truck on the farm and it has a steel flat bed on it and I sometimes pull trailers with it and even load it down with seed and stuff sometimes. The tranny went out of it and it currently has an E40D in it but I don't have a switch for the overdrive like what is in most trucks so I'm not sure if its the original tranny.

I was wondering if there is a better tranny to put in the truck for what it is used for cause the farthest it ever goes is maybe 30 miles but that isn't very often only if I need to go get some stuff for the farm but its average mileage is maybe 10-12 miles so I don't really need OD.

I was just going to get another E40D to put in it but no of the salvage yards in my area has one so I thought I would see if there was a better tranny for me to get for what I use the truck for.

Thanks

Early E4ODs are Ford's best attempt ever at building a can of worms, later years are improved and the rebuilders seem to be doing a decent job of bulking up Ford's original design.

Finding a decent E4OD in a salvage yard is difficult at best and I'm not sure of your engine, but your fallback may be the C6, normally obtainable at approx 1/3rd the cost of an E4OD.

What engine do you have in the truck ? (I can give you swap info and changes needed)

if you don't have an OD cancel button then what makes you think it's got the OD trans in it? because you feel the converter lock up and 3 other shifts?
if you get in and place the trans in D and you just feel 2 shifts total, then she was special ordered with the old c6.you could order the dino trans up til '96.
google image c6 trans pan and E40D trans pan.then have a look at yours.look at the door jam tag.E = E40D.i dunno what code would be c6 but anything other than E is all ya need lol.pretty simple to figure it out but anyway, all ya need to put in there either way is the old dino c6 for your use.cheap and can be found under every old rock.

My engine is a 460. One of our local tranny shops basically said the same about that tranny that it was Fords big mistake for that truck and that for $1600 he can rebuild it and make it a heavy duty trans for what its used for. They wont say what other tranny can be swapped in its place cause they want the business and I can't quiet afford to pay that right now.

I helped my son-in-law rebuild his out of his F-250 4x4 about a year or so ago and its the same tranny. The one in my son-in-laws truck was a joke also. I always had good luck with the c6 but they was always in an F-150 and this is my 1st F-350 I have had.

well an E40D 92-97 equipped truck would have came with the OD cancel button originally.so why it's not there if it's not a special ordered truck with the c6 is beyond me.
the c6 will hold up just fine behind the diesel and 460 trucks (bell housing specific.) no trouble there.the only concern you'd have is the lack of converter lockup, and od.fuel economy will suffer greatly compared to the e40d.nothing you need to worry about if it doesn't get driven much.the other issues you'll run into is making sure the computer controlled 460 can still run ok without the e40d trans hooked up.you'd need to find out what they did to the special ordered 460 trucks to run the c6 in it's place and or manual trans and copy that setup.no doubt folks here know what to do.
still find it puzzling you've got no OD cancel button now,but say it's the E40D trans.

That's what I had found puzzling also was why it has an E40D with no OD cancel button. I had wondered if it maybe the truck came with a C6 in it but then it went out and they may have just replaced it with the E40D.

There was only 1 wire hooked to the tranny but there is a few others hanging there but they was all corroded off and not hooked to anything. I would just as soon get rid of the E40D and go with a C6 if possible cause I know it will handle what I want I do with the truck.
