I have a motorhome on a F-53 chassis, 460 EFI, E40D tranny, 85,000 miles.
Sometimes it won't downshift from OD either automatically or with the electric button on shifter, sometimes it does. What is likely problem? Also am having front pump seal leakage problem which I think I can overcome by installing an electric fan on the on tranny cooler (it is positioned so that the radiator fan doesn't pull air thru it at low speeds -- that's when the seal leaks, not at highway speeds. Does this sound reasonable or do I need to have it rebuilt?
Thanks, jdr37
You may be losing electrical power to the transmission. When there is no electrical power the transmission defaults to 4th gear.
I'd remove the electrical connector on the passenger's side of the transmission. Look at both ends of the connector looking for bent, corroded, or missing pins.
A fan on the trans cooler might help the low speed heat issue. It might also take a bigger trans cooler with a fan.
I pulled the connector out and everything looks extremely clean and in really great shape considering age/milage. I haven't had a chance to road test to see if unplugging/replugging might have cleared the problem, but I have another related question. I failed to mention in my original post that when this problem first started the volt meter indicated an unusaully high draw. I first thought the belt was slipping, stopped and checked it out but it was OK. After a couple of minutes the votage came back to normal. I'm now wondering if this could have been caused by a short in the OD solenoid. If the problem persists, would replacing the solenoid be a likely solution? and/or are there other likely causes???
Thanks,
jdr37
There is no such thing as an "OD solenoid" in your transmission. I think you may need a pro to diagnose what's wrong here. I can't do a very good job over the internet.
