i switched so i wouldn't have the priming issues.now when i change fuel filters i don't have to crank and crank (increasing starter life.)
i don't have to worry about fuel ever going into the oil if the lift pump fails.
it must take at least 1 hp to spin the pump,so i gained this and freed up the engine, though maybe only a tiny bit.with other mods it all adds up.
mechanical lift pumps and fans where done away with because there's better technology now.
the switch is worth it i think.
i fixed all other problems before switching to the electric pump.
tho any hp freed up is probably optimistic at best lol.
its very common to have air intrusion problems causing hard starts with the IDI(it doesn't take long to see a lot of threads about it here.).this mod says goodbye to that problem for good,as your no longer sucking fuel, and relying on the starter to spin the engine, which in turns spins the lift pump to get the fuel back up the lines if she drained back.that's the main reason.
now i just turn the key,and the electric starts pushing fuel through the system, without spinning the motor.all i have to worry about,is fuel leaks, but not air intrusion/hard start problems due to this.
of course, the number #2 reason for insurance is also a good one:
"i don't have to worry about fuel ever going into the oil if the lift pump fails."
After having fuel lines off yesterday for the first time and killing my battery trying to get fuel back into the system I am for sure adding a cheap electric pump with switch just for priming. If nothing else it will save me tons of headaches at fuel filter changes and save my starter from wear and tear.
my truck has never had an issue priming the lines even with removing the fuel filter. I am having another issue in my holy friggin electronics thread but i would take this problem over killing my starter or worse any day!

Fill your filter with an additive or clean fuel and you won't have any problem.
Electric pumps are "bandaids" in most cases, repair the real problem don't mask it.
And the story "I don't want fuel getting in my oil if it the pump goes bad" I don't buy. If the diaphram tears then it won't pump and the engine won't run. If any fuel you may get what's in the pressure side line that's it, especially on the 87-down because of the water seperator being so high.
Crew dually I have seen them run a long time just fine while pumping fuel into the pan.
I just checked the oil in my wrecker the other day and had gas in the oil, not much but it was overfull and you could smell it. My first idi was getting diesel in the oil so I ghanged the oil and it did again all the time running good. New pump problem solved.
I would think everybody checks there oil often enough that it is not a problem though.
I believe I went through the very hard start after changing my fuel filter yesterday and I attributed it to the ATF I put in the new filter. Someone mentioned self priming or bleeding system with these motors. How long do you have to wait for it to self prime/bleed the air out of there?
They only bleed to a point if running or cranking. If totally airlocked you would have to crack open the injectors until you got fuel coming out then retighten them. Take the filter back off and fill it with additive or clean fuel. Did it fire off at all when you first tried to start it?

Yes. It started for a few seconds. I thought it started and ran on the diesel left in the lines and stalled on the ATF. It probably stalled because of an air pocket. I've posted in the ATF thread and there's a guy there who suggested the air pocket causing the issue.
