I have a 223 straight 6 and the fuel pump recently went out. Can I add an electric pump inline, but keep it pumping through the mechanical pump so i don't have to re-route the lines and keep the stock look?
I know that when some pumps go bad the fuel is pumped into the engine and therefore the oil. Does anyone know if this is the case on these fuel pumps, or will an electric in line work without problem?
Yes, you can use an electric pump. I would NOT pump it thru the existing mechanical one. Routing fuel lines is easy and straight forward. I used rubber fuel line from the pump to the carb. Locate the electric pump as close to the tank as possible. They push great, but don't pull well.
I used a Carter electric pump p/n CRT-P4594 from the Summit catalog.
I hope you installed a fuel filter between the tank and the fuel pump input. The pump will last longer. The pump input voltage should be on it own circuit and run through a relay to prevent a large load on other circuits. Kits for this are available if needed. Carter elect fuel pumps are among the better choices. Have a great day, chuck
