Temp #'s

Hi All, a couple of questions about the truck in sig,
A scan-guage reads my tranny temp about 14 deg. warmer than my Isspro guage. I realize this is probally because it reads it at a different place , but does that sound right . 164 vs 150 deg.and which one would you watch to be more critical. this is during DD with no towing and about 33 deg. outside.
And ...the scan-guage reads the ECT to be about 168 /170 deg. warmed up during dd/ not towing.Does that sound right ??.
and... what would be the high temp alarm during towing, if i'm asking that right.

Thanks
Rich

my tranny temp gauge is reading 150 after being driven for a while, i am also in that temp range, i dont know the exact temp for towing but i would really start watching it close if it goes over 180, but thats just me.

If that is as hot as the water gets after a proper warm up time I would be looking to install a new thermistat.

Those ranges don't seem all that out of whack. I would actually watch the warmer one. If if they are in different locations(which they are), if both the probes are in working order, that means some portion of the fluid is seeing that hotter temp.

180 is pretty low of a temp to be concerned. The trans fluid that's in our trucks is fully synthetic and can handle a lot harsher environment then that.

200 and then I would start to look, even though our resident tranny engineer says it can go hotter then that, I draw my own personal line at 200.

That seems to be reading a little low, but not knowing your driving habits and what type of driving you are doing(short trips, long trips etc), that might actually be correct. 33 degree weather, I would see ~180, so you aren't too far off that.

Towing ECT temps will vary due to weight, and environmental factors at time of towing(not just weather, but terrain etc). You will just have to find out what the normal temps for your particular situations(what temps you see more often then not) and then use that as your baseline.

It depends on what ambient temps you are having, what your trips are like and also where is your probe(using OBD-II connection or test port?).

I've done some trips where it barely got to 120, but ECT was at warmup for that type of ambient temp.

Well, if it's an actual physical gauge, then more often then not it's going to be the test port.

Do you happen to know what ambient temps you are seeing and how long(miles and minutes) are your trips and what speeds do your run on those trips?

i guess i dont know what you mean when you are saying ambient temps, most of the time it is back roads at 60mph and some city driving. by physical gauge do you mean like on a pillar, if so yes, it is an autometer tranny gauge

Ambient temp is outside temp.

If the trips don't involve that many miles then with good amount of cold outside temp, you could very well be getting that temp for your tranny.

That's what I mean. More then likely it's in the test port then.

My tranny temp stays at about the 150 range for normal driving conditions. When towing 11k I stay at about 175-180. I dont worry unless I get to the 200+ range then I start to ease off abit. I have seen 200+ going up the rockies in the summer time while towing.

Sorry , The temps I posted were after a 45 mile run down the turnpike w/ the cruise set at about 68 mph at about 33 deg. ambient.
My Issapro was installed in the test port on the tranny, and the 164 was from the obd II from the scan guage,.
When I tow our 5ver (it usually weighs around 12k to 12.5k)in 90 deg. heat ,cruisin at about 60-65 mph the Issapro usually reads around 165. IN 15 to 25 mph traffic and stop and go i've seen it as high as 190-195 , all in tow /haul mode.
As far as the ECT, this is a new guage for me so I just wanted to get a feel for normal operating temp and knowing when to back off when towing to prevent problems.overheating ect.

thanks
rich
