G'Day all. I would like to fit air to my 1964 f600,have been back thru past forums looking for some info.but no luck. I know it was not a factory item but it seems some dealers fitted air conditioners before or after sale.I have seen the VINTAGE AIR brand for f series trucks but I dont want to change my generator which has a long shaft that drives my tacho. My problem is the cross over exhaust pipe at the front of the engine. I have looked at changing the exhaust manifolds but that does not work being right hand drive. I have seen photos of the late fifties "big job" ford trucks which seem to mount the brake air compressor on the top of the inlet manifold. If any body has any suggestions it would be great. take care Brian.
I dont know about your engine compartant but one should be able to drive a compressor somehow. There should be room somewhere.
I honestly dont know why one would need air in a medium truck as they are usualy only an occasional use truck. The 292 gets by making a load move because it was not constrained with alot of accesories and smog equipment. Air conditioning takes about 30HP. The 292 in the 60s was roughly 150-180HP.

You sure your 1964 F600 has a Y block?
1964 was the last year for the 292 Y block in F500 and larger trucks, the first year for FT engines.
Y = the dizzy is behind the carb / FT's = the dizzy is in front of the carb.
1963 was the last year the two Lincoln based Y blocks (302/332) were used in F500 and larger trucks.
Hi Number Dummy. Yes it is a 292 Y Block, This is quite a rare truck in OZ. as it is a Heavy Duty model with a 4 barrel carb with a vacuum Governor Dizzy, thats why I am driving the tacho from the generator the same as early ford tractors and not from the T-Bird Y Block distributor with a tacho pick up, also double row pulley belts plus the engine changes from the standard light duty 292. The Vintage Air brand requires a change to a alternator to make the compessor mounting. The question is not wether or not I need air but how to fit the compressor?a photo would be great.
Does it look like you can use the vintage air bracket if you were to cut off the portion for the alternator?
You could use rams horn manifolds to eliminate the crossover. That will allow more room for either fitting an existing bracket or making one.
It might end up being something you'll have to make.
I have the AC taken from my '64 F-250, and am not going to use it. It is after market. The brackets are pretty simple, bolting through the upper two water pump and timing cover holes with longer bolts and 1 inch spacers, and one or two other places. The main bracket forms a horizontal platform that the compressor is bolted to. One bracket is used to stabilize the top of the compressor and it goes to an intake bolt on the other end.
AC was in use with crossover exhaust and generator. No problems generator interference as the assembly was elevated higher and towards the DS.
The shop I work at is a Vintage Air dealer.
Vintage air does not recommend using their systems with a generator. Most generator systems won't keep up with the load of the fan and the compressor.
Thanks to all who have taken the time to help. I looks like Iam going to have make up a bracket to suit. and make up a complete system that looks like it could have been there since new. take care Brian.
