I have a cracked exhaust manifold, passenger side, 85' F350 4x4, 460, the truck in my signature. I'm debating if I should buy a new or used manifold or just put headers on the truck. The truck has what I believe is a custom dual exhaust, I would have to do some modifying to fit headers. I would like to get rid of all of the air injection garbage. But I do not want to hassle with exhaust leaks or poorly fitting headers. Any thoughts or experiences with headers on our trucks?
Price wise, you can get headers for less money than new manifolds. The downfall is having to pay for the mods to the rest of the system. I'm replacing the whole system at one shot.
I'm hoping that because I bought the headers and muffler already that the rest will not cost too much, as I plan a short system.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to scrounge around a couple of wrecking yards for a manifold. I have not made up my mind though. I still like the idea of headers, I just don't want headaches down the road.
Most everyone's woes with headers are with the cheap ones, thin flanges etc. A quality set with good hardware would serve you well. Biggest issue is clearance of other components.
You can get an aftermarket manifold from Dorman, pretty common, your local parts hosue may even stock it.

For that application, Hedman or Hooker, all the flowtechs I have ever used were complete crap. The thicker the flange, the better to protect against warpage. Also a GOOD set of locking fasteners that you can put the locks on after torquing them multiple times after a few heat cycles. If you put headers on, DO NOT wrap them.
I have the passenger side manifold off my sig truck in good shape with no cracks. Not sure if they interchange or not but I will give it to you for the price of shipping if you want to give it a whirl. PM me
Or you can do hedman Hedders. I have them on mine and they fit perfectly.
