Looking for a diesel truck for pulling a hot-shot. I have looked at the Dodge 6.7 and 5.9. Also looked at a 3500 Chevy Duramax. I have found an F-550 with a 6.0 Powerstroke but not sure about the 6.0's durability. I know they quit building the 6.0 in 2006 (for the 2007's) and that they pretty much worked out all the problems with them but still not sure. Truck checks out with Carfax and has only 29000 miles. A wholesaler has it so there is no maintenence records but is still under factory warranty. Anybody have any thoughts??
i'll be honest here. if i had to do it all over again i would look for a pre egr cummins.i hate the look of the newer dodge's but that engine is a work horse.i've got an 04 f-350 cc swb with the 6l in it and have had my share of trouble, granted it's the usual "stuff", but trouble none the less.i've also been a diesel mechanic for a very long time, so when it comes to maintaining my truck nothing is spared.gl1 is right about fixing the "bugs", but those bugs are rather costly to fix, and the standard diy mechanic can't do the job.all in all when my 04's running good it'll pull down a mountain, but when she's feeling blue i prepair to shell out the green.if you do go 6.0 get the warranty, and enjoy it, because theres not a better looking truck out there than a super-duty.
I am going to check the VIN with my buddy at the local Ford dealer to make sure it is still under warranty. You are right though, nothing like the looks of a Super Duty! I have an 04 F-250 4x4 XLT and I love it. (even with the 5.4) The f-550 I'm looking at is a Lariat 4x4 with the dually bed option. Pretty awesome looking truck but awesome doesn't pay the bills!
It should still be under the "bumper to bumper" warranty. This means that all manintenance work should be written up in the Ford OASIS report. A dealership can pull the report for you w/ a VIN number.
I have my buddy checking the VIN at the dealer he works at and will let me know if any probs with truck, in-service date, repairs etc. I was in the dump truck biz till 06 and the big thing that is a killer is "down time". I'm not sold on the "Blue-Tec" Dodges yet and the Duramax is a possibility just for the Allison trans. But I still prefer the Fords!
The F-550 is probably a little overkill but at least I think the chassis won't be overworked by hauling a 4 car trailer.
