Quite a few others do not feel it is needed.

Either way, if you run hose for a very long distance, use 1 inch hose.

So, Mark, you are saying that there may not be enough pressure in the crank case and that's why you wanted the suction to "suck" it out?

I guess that's my concern too.

I think I read somewhere that on the IH version of this engine (VT365), they just vent to the atmosphere.

As Tim said, you should very well be able to vent to the atmosphere. If you do, use a large enough hose to avoid back-pressuring the crankcase.

You really want to keep the crankcase pressure as low as possible.

Yeah, but more importantly I said I did it that way because I was too lazy to do it how you did yours!Seriously, alot of machinery I have run has CCV vent to atmosphere, well, the older stuff anyway. I'm sure the Tier 3 stuff which is the newest emission standards for heavy equiptment has it doing something other than vent to atmosphere. Probably back into the intake, but not sure.

When using the 1" hose...will regular heater hose work? Or should I be looking at some sort of Hi temp exhaust hose?

I just used the black heater hose, or whatever its for, from Lowes. You don't need hi-temp just ziptie it away from the manifold.

The issue is the hose should not be kinked or have a dead J leg where water and oil vapors can accumulate and block it.

Heater hose will work, so will any other hose that does not collapse easily and can withstand extremes of heat and cold a part on the outside of a truck is normally subject to.

My only reservation with the 1" hose out the back of the truck is that it might get plugged with ice / frozen crud, or from mud / water if the truck is used to ford streams.

What do you guys think of these two breather tanks for use at the end of the 1" hose?

Someone had done one with a filter/canister from TSC, maybe like this Fuel Filter, 1 in NPT Female - 3958244 | Tractor Supply Company Maybe not exactly this, but IIRC it wasn't all that much money.

I think this is the one that I've seen someone use from tractor supply:

Polypropylene Strainer, 1 in. dia., 50M - 2114130 | Tractor Supply Company

Yep, that appears to be the one. I searched and couldn't find it, I knew it looked similar to what I linked. Thanks, Rocky! And only $20 too!
