Remote start killed batteries?

I remote started my truck last week and then decided not to take it to work. I didn't shut it down with the key. When I left the house I didn't have the key. I opened it with the keyless entry and shut it down with the brake, then locked it. Yesterday I tried to start it and it wouldn't start. When remote starting, do you have to put the key in the ignition, turn on, then off, to correctly shut down? Or are the weak batteries simply a coincidence? They are 4 1/2 years old.

I'd say that's a coincidence before I'd think the remote start killed the battery. The age of the batteries is within the norm of what I would expect a battery to fail. Just my opinion.

As a general rule, a vehicle with alternator will not recharge a battery to much extent with the engine at an idle. The amount of electronics on board now days does put a drain on the batteries over a few months of inactivity.

Also, cold weather will tell you the condition of your batteries. More batteries are replace during the cold weather than hot weather. The first cold snap will usually drain/weaken the cold cranking ability of a battery's output when the battery would have most likely started the vehicle in the warm months.

I would charge the batteries and then go have them load tested individually at your local parts house. If either show weak or bad, replace both.

It was cold that day (for El Paso), and since I didn't drive it to recharge from the cranking, it probably took its toll on them. I took them out last night and charged one. the other is charging now. I'm taking them to the local parts place later to have them checked. Thanks for the replies.

Mine went all of a sudden too... In fact the only way I could start the truck was to use the remote start. Until I got the batteries replaced.

Remote start doesn't use any more or less juice than turning the key. Like they said, those batteries were probably just done. If they were the stock OEM batteries, you got more life out of them than most ever will!

My original factory batteries went out this past fall. I replaced them with Sears Diehard Platinum, which I'd had great experiences with in the past. Best part? 4 year free full replacement (no prorated games).
