1997 F350 crew cab..i took the muffler out and welding in pipe to make it a little bit louder...didnt do anything but waste my time..Im going to buy a 3'' dp, should i just cut out the stock stuff and run a straight pipe from the dp back? Or do i have to invest in a system?

Depends on how you want your exhaust ran. If you want to run out the stock location, best bet is a kit. If you wanna turn it down or like me run it before the rear tire, you can do your own exhaust pretty easily. Either way, get a new dp and atleast 4" exhaust

the cat really crushes the sound on these trucks. the muffler is actually a pretty free flowing system from the factory(its straight thru). either way i would do a 3" DP and straight pipe it. if you can do a 4" exhaust then i would go for it.
