My wife drives an 01 excursion 7.3L, and I would like to get the mileage up more for her. Right now it is pretty much stock, about 117000 mile, but I have a 4" exhaust on the way now. What I am think for other stuff is, John Wood valve body, probably synthetic trans oil with external filter, and maybe a dp tuner. Anyone have experience with this similar set of mods or other suggestions. Oh and she is getting about 14mpg right now. Thanks.
Quite honestly, I get around 14mpg with my truck with all the mods in my sig. Not to derail you from doing mods, they will make your Ex run better and last a lot longer, but a very light right foot can do wonders as well - I just don't have one of those! I'm sure others will chime in with suggestions.
I've gotten as high as 22+ on the highway, BUT I've spent a lot to get that. Might get my investment back in about 20 years. LOL All you can really do with a stock truck is go to syns (which cost more, but they last longer), keep all the filters clean, and drive like grandpa (below 70mph), and you'll get close to 20. If you want more, you'll need single-shot injectors (about a grand, plus tooning).
Tell her to pretend there is an egg under the pedal. That is the only way to significantly improve her mileage. Depends on the type of driving she does also. In town she will never get much better than 14 or 15 no matter how light she is on the throttle. I did see a 2-3 mpg gain on easy highway driving after installing the DP Tuner using 80E setting.
The egg under the foot method I can't stress more. People racing to get to the next light and stop and go traffic will kill mileage bigtime. Like Jay and the guys said above, tell your wife to take it easy and you'll see your mileage increase dramaticly.
