I was talking to my pharmacist a couple of months back about the price of fuel. He told me about his buddy that did a intake mod. He took some metal mesh screen and sandwiched it between 2 gaskets below the carb. He was running a 350 with a 4bbl. HE said he got 30mpg. Now I'm sitting here thinking if this would work. I have some screen around the house and will experiment. I'd love to get above 20mpg on my 88 2.0 ranger.
See bullet #3 on that page. Doesn't give any details on it. The only other thing I could find that is sort of like that was in reference to Torque Plus Intake Manifold Gaskets :
The concept of the screen under the carb is probably to break up any drops of gas that aren't vaporized bafore they get into the manifold. I have no idea if this would really work but if you try it be sure to post your results.
These do work, and were standard equipment on some cars in the early 70's. However, there is one serious drawback: In the winter, or any cold days, a little ice ball forms on top of the screen, until it is big enough to block the hole and kill the engine. Of course, by the time you get everything pulled apart to find the blockage, the ice is melted. But yeah, it does work.
