The first mod I did to my truck was a 6637 kit from Riff Raff. I immediately noticed that I don't get the cloud of soot and unburned gasses and crap spewing from the tailpipe when I lean on the loud pedal. I'm definitely getting better combustion (haven't checked mileage) and would highly recommend this cheap and effective mod to ANYONE.
Trevor, I looked at your pics, what is this zoodad mod cut out for?
I think the original idea behind it was to get more air flowing directly to the filter. If you look at the front of the my truck at the right angle, you can see the air filter inside. Some people have had small birds end up under the hood...shows how much more direct it is.
All you do is cut a hole in the header panel in front of the snorkel so it sucks air directly from out front of the truck. Not too much trouble at all. I think it's really better for those that run a CAI -- I doubt seriously it does a whole lot for 6637 users. Unless you box in the 6637, I guess.
For those worried about cutting the battery tray, or having the filter rub on it, here's what I did. I found a wrecked truck (happened to be a 6 leaker, but any 7.3 or 6.0 will do) and swiped the passenger side battery tray out of it (cost me $10 bucks, get the bolts too). Remove the entire stock battery tray, drill a couple holes in the bottom of the "new" tray, and it bolts right in. Cleans up the under hood appearance a bit and gives the 6637 a bit more room. My stock battery tray was rubbing holes in my Pete cover, no more issues there.
Or, for the ultra picky, Ford does sell a steel driver's side battery tray, but they run like $80. Tymar Performance uses them in his kits.
