6637 Alternatives?

Okay, I've been eyeballing the 6637 Filter mod for awhile now and I would definitely like to do it. I think it's the best alternative to big-bucks filter systems, especially for someone like me who's not exactly into money! I've also found that thread that F350-6 started with his custom-made cold air box for the 6637 and I really like that too. Now here's what I wanna know: what's so sacred about the 6637? I really like the idea of a washable-type filter just because I like to try to save money. Are there any other filters I could buy that are washable and/or flow more air? I have the stock box in there now and there's no foil on the IC tubes... either dad removed it when he had it, or the early '99 never had foil. I don't think a wicked wheel will do much either because I heard the early '99 had a different turbo and it was pointless to put a wicked wheel in it. The 4" exhaust I have helps, but I'd love to make it even better. I've heard the 6637 makes alot of noise and making that cold-air box knocks out some of that noise. Does it just quiet the rushing air sound, or does it hush up the turbo as well? I don't mind a little noise... the louder the better for me! I'm not worried about not having a box... I understand that the air gets hotter in the engine than the hot air in the engine bay. Post up! Thanks guys,

Jon

Jon...to pull a piece of my conversation with Clay at RiffRaff, the E99 rigs have the ww from the factory, others are replacing theirs with our part to get that same effect, and our IC pipes didn't come with foil on 'em...as for the 6637, there are alternatives, but are not as readily available...and they cost pretty much the same...we can all find a NAPA and walk in and tell 'em we want a, part # 6637 from them...if you go into Advance Auto and tell them you want a 6637 filter, suddenly, you become an idiot that doesn't know what you're talking about bc they have no idea what you're talking about......as you have an e99 like me, i will tell you that Advance Auto does have a pre-made striaght, 45, and 90, 4 inch piece of pipe and from my understanding, we need the 45 degree piece of pipe to make the 6637 mount correctly...somebody else who has done this will chime in real soonand correct me if i'm wrong...i'm with you, i haven't had a paycheck in @ 2 years, my loot is pretty sketchy, so i haven't been able to just go get what i need to satisfy my PMS...

Early 99 has no foil and a WW stock.
Nothing wrong with a washable filter if you don't mind washing the damn thing. Myself I'd rather replace the filter once a year. AFE makes a 6637 washable element, Riffraff can hook ya up.

Man, the more I read about the early 99, the more I love it! It's got so many things the later ones didn't. One thing though: my dad had changed the top piece of the intake assy. to the later style. I shouldn't need a 45, but I was thinking about running enough 4" so I'd only have a small 3" or so rubber coupler at the CCV output (I intend to mod that someday as well). My reasons for this are because I wanted to streamline the path of travel between the filter and the turbo. I can't remember form back when I tore it apart to replace the glow plugs, but was the inside of the intake hose smooth, or was it rippled like the outside? I'm almost positive that the inside of the rubber boot that goes from the CCV ring to the turbo is smooth. I guess I need to go tear into it. But back to filters... are there other filters out there that'll work and if possible, flow MORE air than the 6637? I'm just trying to look at alternatives here... I'm almost positive about the cleanable type so, if a cleanable 6637 is the best choice, then I'll probably do that.

You probably won't find any new comments than what you can find in a search for 6637. You can always try one out and if you hate it, you're not out much and can go with something else like an AIS or S&B. That filter is obviously a good filter, but I found it made way too much noise for me and gave it to a friend.
I wouldn't use any washable filter without using a pre-filter sleeve over it.

You could retrofit a 6.0L OEM intake onto your 7.3...

If your thinking washable here is that AFE...

Riffraff Diesel: AFE "Big Boost" BHAF Washable Filter

Or you can add it to your 6637 order instead of the dry element...

How would I attach the washable AFE? It wouldn't attach like the 6637...

Also, I've been reading about the filters getting wet... would a 6637 get wet? If so, is it OK? How much is too much?

You attach it just like a 6637, that's why you can add it on that kit page.

The filters won't get wet unless you decide to do a river crossing or something. I have driven in some wet nasty weather and never had any issue.

Wow... the AFE flows 800+ cfm vs. the 600+ cfm of the 6637. Is it enough to make a difference and justify the expense?

the expense is justifiable in the money you will save on buying replacement 6637's change the 6637 a couple of times and you have paid for a washable lifetime filter. I am probably one of the first ones on this board to run a AFE big boost filter. I have had it for going on three years now, and its still doing great. I was the original guinea pig for Petes prefilter, and it is still holding up great after 3 years too.

Woah... I'm looking through your gallery and the filter is the same size as the 6637, or at least close! It looks tapered... man, I think I just might go for that.

It is exactly the same dimensions as the 6637. It is not tapered, but does have an inverted cone on the end. great filter.

PS Wow that gallery is old... Look here for some updated pics, there are some better pics of the filter here.

so Brandon, the AFE is just the filter???...i see the part # in your pic...without taking the time to do a search, is it much more expensive than the $45 for the 6637???

while searching...the part # is just for the cover according to AFE's site...which filter did you go with???

NVM...found it...$93 huh...holy crap...i think i'll go with the 6637...

Man, now I gotta decide! HAHA... well, that AFE flows more air than a 6637, but costs more! I'm not spending $200 to $400 on an intake either... I think it's unnecessary. What do you guys think? How long does one 6637 last?
