You want it such that you are running about 2600 RPM at the speed you normally cruse. The ratios you mentioned are very low, unless you are running very tall tires.

My best for gas mileage is a 3.54 ratio with 29.5 inch dia. tires, however, it is a bit slow off the line.

Is the truck you are refering to the 72 F100 in your username? A Dana 70 would be found in the one ton F350s, your 1/2 ton F100 has a 9" rear. The 9" is quite adequate for your F100.

Setting up a truck for daily driving and for racing is a different setup. Don't know what engine you are running, but my 352 FE and 3.00 rear will get the job done on the street pretty good.

You are not going to teach Ricers any lesson by putting an axle in the rear (Dana 70) that weighes more then their whole drivetrain and you are not going to teach them any lessons on the highway after 50 mph because of the drag of that year truck.

What you run for the rear depends on your engine and transmission.

72, I can't see your truck, and don't know what you skill level is for IDing parts. Your question "best rear end choice??" led me to believe that you wanted help.

Was I wrong?

stock rice

You must be racing some anemic (stock) ricers, a lot of the ones that hit the track out here are pushing some serious hp. I once had a built 396/turbo 400 in a '57 Chev pickup that would raise some eyebrows in those little cars, but that was before the explosion of big money rice power. (Ok I sold it and bought a Ford.)

well, here there are alot of high money ricers that i race,my 289 kicks all their butts, even with their NOS and turbo's and super chargers.....i used to own an s10 that i put a 350(stock internals, just pretty looking)and with a 5 speed and still kicked all their butts,so it must be dumb luck, lol, idk,or they are bad racers or im good, either way i win almost every time....

With a 302/c-4 the best all around for highway and off the line would be a Ford 9 " with 3.54 (widely available) with 31 tires (29.5 actual) and a 2400 rpm on the highway at 60 mph. 4.10s would give very good kick off the line, but, put you at 2800 at 60 mph which would wind the 302 up too much since 2200 is a good target on a 302.

Why not go with the best of both worlds, a Gear Vendors Overdrive unit.
