Cool 4lo blinking

Ive got an 89, 302, AOD with push button 4x4. If i push the 4HI i can hear the relay click as well as the motor on the transfer case engage. But I dont really feel it clunk into 4x4. If I push the 4LO button I hear the relay click and the motor engage but the 4LO light just blinks.

Whats goin on??

The shift motor is probably not fully engaging... or the shift computer "thinks" it isn't. This is a common problem with the electronically shifted t-cases. Typically what happens is the shift motor stalls for some reason and doesn't fully engage the gearing. What causes it? A dying shift motor or internal micro-switch issues in the t-case. Sometimes pulling the shift motor and resetting it back in the 2HI position will rectify the problem. But if you go through that much effort, you might as well make sure the motor is working properly anyway. The difficulty there is that the shift circuitry relies on the micro-switches inside the t-case to determine when the motor moves and how far.

When you go into 4 low are you stopped? Is the transmission in Neutral? Do you have an Owner's Manual?

Greystreak, on my 88' Bronco (with electric shift) I had to rebuild the t-case. I tour that thing completly apart. There were no micro switches in it. The only electrical conections were for the shiftmotor and the magnetic clutch. Were there differnt models?

I recall the blinking 4-low. I believe it was as gk50 said, you must be stoped and in newtral or maybe even in park.

I am stopped. Tranny is in neutral. And yes I do have an owners manual. It has been awhile since i used the 4x4, so i tried it the other day just to make sure things were workin still and this is what happened.

So how do I reset it back to 2HI position? And how do you tell if motor is working rite if its dependant on the micros?

Ok so i pulled the shift motor last nite. it seems to be working, but..... if i hit the 4HI button the shift motor moves to the 4HI position. if i hit the 4LO button the shift motor only moves to the 4HI position, no farther. yes the tranny is in neutral. it doesnt matter if i hit the 4HI button first or the 4LO button first, the shift motor will only move to the 4HI position.

where do i go from here??

is it in the electronics in the drum that the shift motor actually connects to(which then connects to the transfer case)? (Is this where the micros you were talkin about are located??) I am assuming these electronics are what tells the system which position the shift motor moved to??

Is it in the shift module under right kick panel??

is it in the electronics that tell the transfer case that the tranny is in neutral??

and is there anyway to test any of these parts besides just replacing them?

helirich,

My apologies. My post was misleading. I crossed two ideas... at any rate. The shift motor assembly itself has internal positioning sensors on the BW1356, not the t-case itself. These "tell" the shift module the relative position of the motor armature. This is how the module "knows" what mode the t-case is operating in. The module "expects" to see a signal from the motor assembly to verify the position and therefore the gear range selected. If the motor stops between sensors for some reason, the module cannot "find" the armature position and causes the blinking 4LO light so as to point out the malfunction.

So it sounds like my problem is most likely in the position sensors that are attached to the shift motor, is that rite?? If so, is there anyway to test them without buying a new shift motor? And is there a way to test any of the other electrical components in the system?
