Push button 4x4 problems

Push button 4x4 problems
hey guys. got a problem with my 93 F150 4x4
when i got it, 4x4 worked good. never tried 4LO though....but i used 4HI several times. worked good.
Couple weeks ago i went to use 4LO for the 1st time, 4LO engaged and truck definetly shifted into 4LO.
Then BOTH 4x4 lights on the push button and the "4x4 idiot lights" in the gauge cluster started to DIMLY flicker really fast. like milliseconds between blinks, not very bright. pushing the buttons does nothing
So I unhooked the shift motor, removed it and got the truck back in 2 HI manual, but the shift motor is still in 4LO position. I tried unhooking everything including the battery, same problem
Tried a different 4x4 control module from the junkyard, same problem.
I tried doing the self test on BOTH modules (old one and the new one) and neither one of them light up with the harnesses unplugged or plugged, key on or off. i cant get that little red light to come on..
Seems the problem has to be the shift motor right??? or a short somewhere?
