To some extent it is personal preference, because the shock will work either way. However, the factory shocks have the body on the bottom. The front Bilsteins have the body on the bottom, and would not fit the other way. The rods will stay cleaner if you put the rod on top.
I put rods on top, and in some neighborhoods that means it is correct.
Supposedly the bilsteins mount body up. Sometimes it does make a difference as to the valving whether they are up or down, but again, I haven't really noted that practically. In some instances I thought I noticed a difference, but physically I don't know how it would really affect the operation.
I think it was common to mount front Bilsteins with the body upward on the 2004 and earlier leaf spring trucks. The instructions might have even said that, but when I installed mine on an '06, there was nothing to say that. Of course with the spear mount, you couldn't do it anyway.
We also have to remember that there are two Bilstein models, the HD, and the 5100 racing series. I used the HD. So I can't say what the 5100 instructions say.
I was getting the Icons origanally, but they only had these Bilstiens.Unfortunately, there was no instructions.Do you know which ones these are as far as part # ? The thing that brought this to my attention is the Fox's matter which way on some models.Heres the fronts.
