well i can get the flowmaster 50, 2 & 1/4" inlet and outlet on line for $80.00 plus shipping. so $105.00 to my door. i just went outside and listened to my truck and right now, with both cats and the stock muffler, i have pretty much no sound. quite as a mouse.
well it also has the offset inlet and outlet like the original muffler. the glass pack is straight threw. figure it will kinda tweak the pipes and im worried about the sound. now my jeep has a 350 sbc with long glass packs and rear exit duals, exhaust, it sounds great, but its a 35 sbc.
My next Flowmaster muffler will probably be the 50 series, then. I guess I'm finally growing out of the "LOUD LOUD LOUD" stage and just want something that's loud when I floor it.
Thanks again man, appreciate your imput. By the way, did your 4.9 have cat converters with the 50 series?
Hotrod, let me save you a little heartache. I heard a 300 with no cats and a factory muffler before. It sounded horrible. The truck sounded like a Honda. I strongly suggest you go with either the Flowmaster or Magnaflow, or something similar. -shrug- I think it would sound good with a medium length glass pack, and that's the cheapest route.
Just my two cents.
My old F150 with the 4.9 had both cats for most of the time I had it. It sounded the best like this with the 50. Then later on it had just the front cat and the 50. This did not sound as good, but still sounded fine.
In my opinion, there is a balance of loudness and tone quality to make the 4.9 sound good. Of course stock is too quiet, but the louder it gets, usually the worse it sounds.

Yes, that's true. The louder a four-nine gets the worse. But, I have heard a few that really sounded great. I don't understand why mine doesn't sound closer to a V8 like others I've heard but I know it's possible to make a 4.9 sound like a beast.
The very best setup I've ever had had both factory cats, a Y pipe, and dual louverd glasspacks on the tips. A nice loud burbley idle and a mellowish acceleration, no rice. To be honest I don't know how much difference the packs made considering they were on the end of my tailpipes..?
If you ever get the chance Ty, I'd love to hear your 302.
well right now, and since i bought it 5 years ago, thats how its sounded, quite, and thats what i want. besides i have a harley with vance & hines longshots on it and thats LOUD. kinda of weekend warrior, quite as a mouse during the week and loud as hell on the weekend.
