exhaust question

i have 160,000 miles on my truck, 4.9, and ive been thinking about getting rid of my cats, i have two of them, one right after the other. i live in a area where theres no emissions test. im not sure if id being doing my engine any good or not. could my cats still be good after all those miles, and is it normal to have two of them. is my engine going to run ok removing them.

The first one is not a Cat. It's called a resonator and is just an empty chamber.

They are both cats. A pre-burner and an after-burner. If the truck is running fine and not throwing any codes I wouldn't touch them. You might gain a few horses by cutting them off but not much to matter. Those cats make the air safer to breathe for you and your passengers. Have you ever heard a 300 with no muffer and both factory cats? It sounds cool. It sounds like a tractor going down the road. If you're after noise, just cut the muffler off. If your cats are plugged you could go ahead and cut them off but chances are it's illigal. If you had the money I would suggest replacing them both with one high flow catalytic converter.

X2 both are cats. Both are well noted for being restrictive. So two choices, leave them on, cut off the muffler. Or replace the two with a single high flow converter then control the sound with a muffler of your choice. I prefer to do all I can to preserve the air I breath, please keep some type of converter(s) on your truck.

OK, I guess I was wrong.
My 302 has this, and I thought it was a cat too, till I took it off and found it empty. A little research after that showed me that it was a resonator.

In your case it WAS a cat....now it is functioning as a resonator I'm sure a PO emptied out the magic or it disintegrated on it's own. As a matter of fact the huge 24" by 7" round cat on my F350 was also emptied by a PO.

i agree, 2 cats also

on my 300 i put a flowmaster 40 on and loved it, throw one high flow cat on for $50 (catco) and your done and have maybe a little better mpg/pep...

cats are required in every state. they aren't hurting you that much

just wondered = how many miles can be put on a cat, i know it depends on how clean the engine was running, but lets say the engine ran great and clean. is there a unlimited number of miles or is it like a set of tires, sooner or later your going to have to replace it no matter what, 100,000 miles, 300,000 miles. who has over 200,000 miles on there original cat.

I don't mean to open a can of worms here, but I had to share this. Today I heard a 300 I6 that sounded like a V8. This is the second 300 I've heard in person that sounded like a V8. I coudn't crawl all over the truck like I would have liked to. This was in the Home Depot lot and it was raining. The man did say he had headers, though. The piping looked like 2.50'' and he said it was true duals.

And to answer your question, my truck had 200,000 miles before I preformed surgery on my cats. They were still in good order. No problems out of them, anyway.

well the inlet pipe on my muffler is loose, i can wiggle it around, the outlet seems fine, i can see where the front has been leaking, by the staining running down the front of the muffler. i dont really see how the muffler could be clogged though, just loosened up. im bored and it would be somewhat of a job, seeing as the muffler is original and seems it would take quite a bid of missing with to separate it. but is it really hurting anything by being like this, im sure exhaust gas, a very small amount, is leaking out the loose space at the front but again is it hurting anything to just leave it alone. by the way, checker has a direct replacement for $38.00, same size as original.

I hollowed out the front cat on my truck and replaced the back one with a high flow Magnaflow. We have emissions testing here and the truck passed very well. I also encourage people to run catalytic converters for everyones sake.

By the way, the Magnaflow was 3"in/3"out universal that cost under $100 canadian. Everything is stupid expensive up here so you could probably get a good deal on your side of the border.

one setup that i was looking into myself was having this setup:
MagnaFlow 93302 on summits website.. its essentially a new y pipe with a high flow cat. and then doing either a magnaflow or flowmaster muffler. as far as piping, not too shure between 2 3/4" and 3"... check out that magnaflow 93302 setup on summit tho...it looks of good quality..
