Does my 98 Explorer have two cats? If so, can't I legally take one of them off and leave the other on? I thought I saw the 02 sensor behind the cats, but then I saw what appeared to be another after them. You can't have two O2 sensors on a single exhaust, can you?
Well my 97 has two, and 4 o2 sensors....... all b4 the y to the single exhaust, and then a huge muffler ,watta restrictive exhaust...... I'm going out to the garage to find my cutting torch.......
Technically you need to be "qualified" to touch a Cat. Not sure what that legally means. When I changed mine I filled out a little card, signed it and sent it in to the Cat manufacturer...at least it's registered for warranty purposes.
But no, you can't legally remove a Cat. If you have a pre and post cat, like my 93 Explorer does, they actually do different things. So removing one will change the emissions.
If you do modify any of this, you need a special exemption for the stae smog bureau, whatever it's called in your state.
Reason for 2 O2's in one pipe is usually pre and port the cat so yes, with different types of gasses on either side, the 2 O2's can be used for different purposes in the controls system.
We don't have emissions inspections here. Mechanically, though, I can't take one off since there is an O2 sensor after the cats? I took one of the two off of my Bronco, but the O2 sensor was b/f the cats. I'm guessing this makes a difference?
I know it looks bad having 4 cats, but it's not that restrictive. I tried to get the 4 replaced with 2 high flow cats. Apparently in my state you cant replace them unless they go bad. I had everything else replaced instead.
I have heard about people doing this (replacing them with HiFlow cats) and it leads to a lot of problems with the O2 sensors. Something about too much heat?
A guy I know did this in his F-150, he was going though 1 O2 sensor every month.
So don't get you "buddy" to do the job, it will be nothing but a disapointment. Get the bigger exaust, and the Tourqe Monster headers. That should do the job.
