long story short i broke/lost 2 end caps on my passenger side axle u joint. I have looked and have not come across a DIY that shows how to replace this, and how to take apart my manual hubs. My truck is a 79' f150 short bed 351m, ive been told i have a dana 44 in the front but i honestly dont know that much about my truck yet, im a vw guy and they always seem to get all the attention, but now its almost winter i need to get on the ball and finish this, any help would be appreciated! Thanks
Remove the brake caliper. Take out the 6 allen head bolts & remove the lockin. Then inside the hub there is a snap-ring on the axles end & one around the inside of the hub, remove them. You will need a 4 point hub wrench next to remove the inner spindle nuts. Remove the hub, the rotor goes with it. Next remove the 5 spindle nuts. I always thread one of the big axle spindle nuts back on and hit it with a soft hammer to break the spindle loose, some people try to drive a chisel in between the steering knuckle and spindle bracket if it's stubborn. Remove the spindle & the axle just slides out.
Thank you guys, im gonna pull my truck in the drive way today and hopefully get to pull the axle out and getting my new u joint installed!
Ninja Edit:
on the link i-w posted the very last picture shows someone pounding out the axle u joint, however the one side of the u joints dont look to have a retaining clip in them, how is that cap staying in place??
Axle u-joints use an internal c-clip. These are found on the inside of the cap and not on the outside like a driveshaft joint.
Once removed the joints will come out like normal.
Do check the ID of the axle shaft and stub shaft where the joint connects. Many times, (aalmost always) when the joint fails, it takes out the ears or either the shaft or the stub, and sometimes both.
You are running Boggers. While they look real nice, and are not super giant tires, they do offer a ton of traction. Combine this with a 335 series engine that cant spin the tires real fast, and you have a recipe for broken parts.
Expect to become a pro on broken front end components. You will get a bunch of practice.
the ears on the axle are good, just a slight hint of scraping because its sitting on a large nut on the knuckle. In the last 4 years of owning this truck i have twisted 1 driveline, broken 2 pinion yokes,3 velocity joints and more rear u joints than i can count, but this is the first time with anything in the front end. *knock on wood*
