rear view mirror
rear view mirror
How do I get the old rearview mirror mount off glass. Don't have the mirror that went with the truck. So I guess I'll put a newer type on. But the old mount is right were I need to mount the new one. I've heard soom have cracked the windshield trying to remove it?
The super glue the part is bonded on with can be broken down with acetone. You can use fingernail polish remover w/acetone, don't buy the one without, or go to a hobby shop and by the debonder they sell for super glue. It takes 10-15 minutes and a few applications to soften up the glue.
THANKS: I've heard that. I've also heard takeing a small hammer (tack hammer) just hit it on the side (pop it) and it should just pop off. But I can't do that my luck glass well crack. Been thinking how to keep it wet long enough for the acetone to work, because it dries so fast. Again Thank you! I'll give it a shot. I'll hold a paper towel up under against it and keep dripping solvent over it. And use the razer blade to. Bet that old stuff is etch in the glass good sence it's stayed on so long. May have to look around for the replacment that will work with the mount.
Um, isn't that a part of the rear view mirror, and it's supposed to come off the mount/button with a alan wrench?
Loosen the alan screw, and lift up.
The button, or mount is a Flat piece of metal, and that is what is glued to the windshield.
Then a new Rear View mirror can be placed and screwed down on the button...
Or am I missing something?

Unless you want to look around some junk yards... I think that type of mirror was used on some other cars also. Like maybe Falcon, 68 Galaxie, LTD. Have to look at my parts tomorrow. Don't forget to join the SC chapter if you haven't already. I get down to Walhalla once in a while.
I checked on ePay and there are quite a few rear view mirrors that would work for you there with the bracket you have.
Autoglass shops used a heat gun to remove the windshield bracket from the glass. Y'all can use a hair dryer.
81-F-150-Explorer: What you see in post #2 is correct for 1967.
It was also correct for 1968/70...as long as the windshields for all these years were the originals.
After 1970, if the windshield was replaced, the mirror also had to be replaced, because the 1971 and later mounting bracket came with and was glued to the glass.
In 1971, Ford changed the mirror and how it was mounted on F100/750's (passenger cars changed in 1969).
Instead of using the type of bracket shown in post 2 (C1SZ17698D) that also used two separate arms, the 1971 and later mirror mounting bracket is a flat shouldered plate (C9AZ19698A).
The 1967/70 mirror was composed of 4 separate parts: Mirror, two arms, mounting bracket.
The chrome version of this mirror was used on 1961/66 Birds, 1963/66 Galaxie/LTD's and other passenger cars. 1967/68 cars used black plastic versions.
The 1971 and later mirror is a one piece assembly, there are no replaceable parts. The bracket portion slips over the shouldered flat plate that is glued to the glass, an allen screw is used to tighten the mirror.
1971 and later mirrors: There are several different lengths, and thru 1972, both day/night and without this feature were available.

Replacement mirror glass
Was wondering if I could have a new piece of mirror glass cut for an original day night mirror for a 68 f250?
the reflective coating is coming off of the original one, I've removed the glass from the mirror by popping it from the mirror housing. Or is it possible to re apply the reflective surface to the original glass?
