A 1986 F150 it has the external mirrors we all know. I'm just wondering why with 10 kabillion of these trucks running around why I can't find a nice power mirror?
Also I have to replace the inside rearview mirror. Can I safely knock off the mounting block glued inside the windscreen? I plan on having it replaced next year as funds allowed.
Why do you need to knock the block off the windshield? If it's stuck good I certainly would not try to get it off. Just take the set screw loose and it will slide right off the block.
I will warn you, the aftermarket rearview mirrors you get in the store are not very good. I had to get one because the silver stuff was coming off the stock mirror. The aftermarket mirror bounces as you go down the road, making everything blurry. I also ran into that with a ebay outside power mirror on my Tahoe. It bounces and makes everything blurry in the mirror. So I would stick with junkyard/OEM mirrors if you can.

I personally like arm style mirrors but I am replacing them with Jr.West Coast style due to mine being worn out. As far as the inside rear mirror goes, you can remove it but I certainly wouldn't "knock it off" , risking breaking/shattering the "windscreen/windshield". I would shave between the mount and the glass with a X-Acto type or single edge razor blade until it releases. For the replacement on mine, I ordered a reproduction 55-56 F-Series mirror and plan on screwing it to the interior trim at the top of the windshield between the visors.
Alirighty, I didn't realize the block glued to the windscreen was a standard.
I'd keep it because it's original to the truck but like Franklin my silver is peeling.
I hadn't thought about the West Coast mirrors, I might give them a look.
As always the advice is appreciated...now to get to that air pump...
Check the west coast mirrors out and see if you like them, I didn't. The ones I am talking about are like minature 18 wheeler mirrors that mount on top of door pillar and the top of the door panel. They mount high which is good for vision, but they create a blind spot you have to get used to when going through a traffic intersection. I also did not like how they blinded me at night from headlights behind me.
After some more internet pursuing guess what I found? We have a solution here on our forum. Well it's really over with the coal-burners but it will work!
About the mirrors, I removed the West coast (I agree with Franklin 2) and replaced them with 86 base pickup door mirrors. These mount in the same 2 holes as the west coasts. I bought them from LMC and they look stock and are good quality. I plugged the lower two holes that were used to mount the west coasts with Allen round head screws and if I sell the truck they can be re used to remount the old ones.
The other thing I like about the new ones is the right hand mirror is true size image and I don't have to fold them in to get in the garage.
I bought a small 6" interior mirror because mine was missing and I didn't want a large one. It doesn't bounce at all, probably because it's so small. As for the mount, yes they are sometimes different. All I did to remove mine was to take a large adjustable wrench and twist it off.
