Hang with me here and forgive me for the dumb question as I'm new to PSD's. I changed the oil/filter in my truck just after I purchased it, about 2800 miles ago. The family and I are getting ready to head out on a nice camping road trip. I will be pulling my travel trailer through the mountain in CO and UT and on into CA to attend my son's graduation from Marine boot camp (I'm sooo proud of him!!). Trailer weighs about 5k fully loaded. We will probably put about 3k - 3.5k miles on the truck which will put me over the recommended 5k oil change. Should I change the oil before I head out or will I be okay for my trip? I use 15-40 Rotella. I don't have a bunch of money to throw around so it would be nice to not have to change it but I don't want to have any problems either.
I would change the oil before you leave. The reason is, the 5,000 mile change is for no towing, so says the book. You will be towing the whole trip, so 3,000 mile oil change is the rule, according to Henry Ford.
If it were me, I would be changing the oil when I got back anyway, so it shouldn't be an issue to go a little over to get the trip done. I would definitely bring a little extra (I usually bring a full gallon and a partial just to be sure) and a funnel to keep it topped off. With that "light" of a load, I think level is more important than age (miles on the oil).
