my 2002 7.3l excursion recently started dieing, falling on its face only to not die and keep on running. Figuring a CPS and needing ti the next day I got a grey cps from ford. That fixed most syptoms, but created another. Now I have a mild surging between 600-1000 rpm, generally when the engine is warm. I do have a diablo chip, but it is otherwise stock excpet for the gauges. Do I just need a black cps or do I have another problem? My bet is a black IH cps might solve the issue.
You could always set the truck back to stock and see what difference that makes. Like Huck said, the "new & improved" cps typically causes a rough idle and contribution faults.
the weird thing about these gray ones is that it seems to be hit or miss with them. i had mine changed during the recall and then i read so much bad about them i bought a couple of the remaining black ones and stuck one in. i havent noticed a difference between the two. just my experience though.........
this particular chip is non adjustable... it was there when I bought the vehicle. It does good on economy but I like the DP F6 in the F350 better. I suppose I could pull the chip and see what happens. I recently replaced the cps on the F350 with a napa cps and had no issues, but napa did not have one when i went to get one for the ex.
