Do you need to shim cps??

I brought a extra cps to leave in the glove box today at the internation dealer.
while at the parts counter, i was asked by the parts guy if i was going to shim the cps, I told him that i didnt know that it needed to be shimed, He then went on to tell my to use a small piece of clay on the end of the cps, then push the cps into the block until it bottoms out, remove the cps to see how much shim would be needed, Then i asked him how much clearance is need, he didnt have a answer. Has anybody ever shimmed there cps, i have never heard of this before. They may have been trying to get me to let them install it.

Here is some info I found on the subject.

If your OLD CPS has any shims/spacers, you should discard them. The NEW CPS does not need them. SHIMS were used on the older engines to compensate for camshaft endplay.
