Its missing the endcap incasement but the actual button on the end is there. when i push it it doesnt light anything up like its working... just wanted to see what you guys thought. Should i get a new switch from ford ($15) or could it be something else?
Can you actually lock out overdrive with the switch? I'm not too well versed in the later model E4OD electrical stuff but I would think if you can't lock out the overdrive gear while driving then that would be the real test to show if the switch still works.
I havent gotten the truck on the road yet, but I just remember on a ford explorer i had... if you pushed the button it would light up OD on the dash or on some right on the shift lever end.
On my e40d when you push the button the light on the lever lights up with OD OFF. This is also the light that flashes if you have problems or codes that need dealing with. The od is enabeled as soon as you start the vehicle and you use the button to lock it out.
good to know... maybe i will grab a new endcap and see if that does anything... but either way at least i know it will be in OD. (i wont be workin the truck hard at all in the foreseeable future)
It is supposed to light up, unless the light is burnt out. The only way to test it is to take it down the road. Since the end cap is missing which was a famous thing for these trucks to make sure the button is properly inserted all the way. it may have worked its way loose. If after going down the road and it still doesn't work get a new button and endcap from ford (rather inexpensive) and that should fix it, yet still a notorious problem with the autos
There's no light to burn out in these things tho, just an LED but those hardly ever go bad (true for both the on-dash switches and the on-shifter switches). What goes bad with the on-shifter switches, however, is the harness from the switch down to the PCM - at the very base of the shifter where the harness comes out of it and wraps around the steering column it can rub through its insulation, there are just three tiny wires in that harness and they have no additional protection such as a rubber or nylon sleeve to avoid wear onto the hard parts of the column. I'd suggest that the shifter is pulled and the wires are carefully inspected, and if all checks out good there electric tape gets warped around them to prevent future issues with wear.

I stopped by the local ford dealer this morning to pickup a new button and cap. While I was waiting I briefly spoke to one of the mechanics and he said the exact same thing... He suggested getting a new shifter, so I did and that in fact not the problem. I waited on getting the new button because he was fairly certain it wouldn't be that but the shifter... None the less I did inspect the old shifter and the wires did become exposed out of the sheeth, but not the bare wires themselves. Im going to stop by and pickup the new OD button and try it in the old shifter and then the new one if that doesnt work... If it doesnt work on both then I know its got to be something else.
yup i swapped in just the button and it works now. dealer let me return the shift lever without on re-stocking fee too. only thing left now is figure out why my wipers dont work...
wipers could be the turn signal combination switch. To check turn the wipers on and get test light to check and see if there is power getting to the wiper motor. If no power double check and make sure that the fuse and relays are good if so that would pretty much mean the switch is bad.
