The button on the gear shift doesn't work. I've had a 99 and now a 04 and the button has failed on both trucks. I don't know how to replace it. I have tried to twist it out ,but do not what to apply to much force as to break it. whats the trick.
If you are talking about the Overdrive cancel button, then there is a plastic ring on the end of the gear selector lever. You can pry out the ring with a small screwdriver on the back side of the ring (180 degrees from the Overdrive label).
Once the ring is out you can use two small screw drivers to pull it out the end of the shift lever. The button has a length of wire that has a connector on the end so you will have to remove the steering column cover to get to the plug. Should be 3 screws from the bottom to drop the lower half of the cover. The tilt lever unscrews. The top cover comes off once you remove the key tumbler. To remove the tumbler, put your key in the ignition and turn to on while pressing up on the little pin from underneath (visible once the lower cover is removed.
When you have the button unplugged inside the column, you can get the button out.
PartsGuyEd is out ill right now so you might have to wait to order the replacement switch. It's possible your switch might just have a bad wire that you can correct. If so, the wire might be accessible just by removing the top steering column cover.
Once you have replaced the switch and find that it STILL doesn't work, take the plastic cover off of the steering column. Inspect the wires where they enter the shifter handle. One or more are either broken or worn through. Either fix the wires or replace the shifter handle.
