'97 E4OD overdrive button quit working

'97 E4OD overdrive button quit working
'97 E150 van 110K 4.6 E4OD
This van hads the overdrive button on the end of the shifter. My son is on a trip and told me that the OD light doesn't come on and it doesn't down shift when he pushes the button. It's always worked before. It seems to shift in & out of OD OK when you step on the gas, it's just the manual override button isn't working. Is this a common problem? and easy solution I can give him over the phone. Just trying to save the brakes on some of the downhills.
