auto meter pyrometer

hey guys, hopefully just a quick question but me and a friend installed my auto meter z-series 3 gauge pillar pod this weekend but didnt get to finish the install of the pyrometer due to lack of a tap. Well i have a tap now and he is busy and i was wondering if i need to worry about shavings falling into the up pipe since i will be doing it myself probly. If i should be concerned about shavings what is the best preventative step to take besides the lube, i was told by many to keep it dry.. thanks for any input.

Your should drill and tap the exhaust manifold at it's lowest point where is bends. Use grease on the drill and tap..( I used my big shop vac and suck out any shavings that might have got inside).. Make a test hole in some scrap metal and tap it first.. If you go too deep with the tap, you are in trouble.. your sensor will not seat tightly in the threads..

You are drilling and tapping in a up direction, so if any small amount of debris is left in the hole, using a vac should remove them.. Cast iron has small chips and should stick to the grease..I would not worry too much.. Another tip is to drill in steps.. smaller drill 1st.. and remember not to tap too deep..

Anything left behind will be blown out. At idle, the turbo isn't spinning fast enough for any tiny metal pieces to even affect the wheel. Countless people have drilled/tapped/installed the probe, and none have destroyed a turbine wheel.

If you want to vacuum out the shavings, there's no problem doing that. I never did, and I've installed 2 probes on my truck since I've owned it. One went in the up-pipes. Then when the up-pipes got replaced, the new one went in the manifold. Neither installation caused any problems.

Look at the following FTE thread ... scroll down and there is a pic of the manifold.. I guess it isn't exactly straight up but pretty close to it... see:
