i finally bought a pyrometer and installed it pre-turbo. it wasn't as hard as i thought it would be to drill & tap the hole and clean the shavings out of the manifold. but my problem is now the gauge won't go below 100*. even if it is cold outside and the truck sat overnite in it, the gauge still reads 100* at startup then goes to about 300* at idle. also i was curious if anyone knew what the egt's are suppose to be when not pulling anything just driving normal. say at idle and cruisin at 1500 rpms and 2000rpms. im afraid the gauge might be off but i thought auto meter was a good brand.

What temp range is the pyro? Mine is a 2000* and doesn't seem to drop below 100 either. One thing we need to remeber is it will read ambiet temp too, so depending on how sensitive it is it might be off by 30* or so? So 70 would read 100, just a guess. Idle I'm around 300-400 or so. Cruising down the interstate at 65, round 2k it's about 6-800* depending of wether it's a flat strech or grade.
mine reads about 100 before start up. theyre not very accurate below a certain temp ( i think 300*) I run about 6-8 cruisin also and will shoot up to 9-1000* on a hill if a get in it
ok well my pyro does the same as yours so i guess it is accurate. i've only touched 1200 once or twice while pullin a trailer and i wasn't sure if the gauge was off or not so i was a little nervous.
my truck is a 97 350. all it has done to it is diablo 60-90hp chip, stage 2 injectors, dual 5" stacks and the 6637 filter. my turbo spools up real slow though and it only reaches about 25lbs of boost so maybe its not gettin enough air. i want to get a aftermarket turbo or maybe a superduty turbo. i wanna sell my diablo and buy the TW chip. and i wanna put a superduty HPOP on it. lots of stuff need to be done but short on cash. i touch 1200 when pulling a 9000lb excavator but it only was that high for a minute while taking off from a stop or while drag racing. like the mazda who flipped me the bird after i let off and he finally passed me (must not like the taste of diesel smoke coming in the vents)
I've had problems with auto meter's pyro in the past. Mine goes up to 1600 and is accurate the entire range. If it's 50 degrees out its exaclty between 0-100.
I assume its an electric gauge, does it competley zero out when it calibrates itself at startup?
There are not many cheap turbos for the OBS. However, there are a couple options, the D66, H2E. The D66 is a direct bolt in on our trucks. It's just a modified stocker that handle more boost, flows more air.
You didn't list any exhaust mods. First thing you should do is get rid of that stock downpipe and get a decent exhaust. That will really help your quick spool up and EGTs. There is an active exhaust thread going now so look at that. A TW chip would help you also, as would the 17* HPOP. From what I read on here, our turbo is an upgrade for super duties. You could go with a D66 or H2E, but first your money would be better spent on your exhaust and a TW chip. To list your mods under your posts, click on the User CP link above.
You can put an intercooler on your truck with the stock turbo and get lower egt's. If you want more boost you can get a 1.0 housing, it will spool faster but the egt's will go up a bit.
You can also get a d66 turbo from Beans. It will give you more power and I have heard that it helps with the egt's but if you are going to get bigger with your injectors you will need a different setup.
You can get an H2E or similiar setup and it will definately give you lower egt's but you probably need more fuel to spool that turbo. The stock turbo will not be long lived with boost #'s at or above 30 psi very long.
If you have stage II's and are getting only 25 psi I would get a TW like you said and have it burned for II's. You should see #'s close to 30.
That being said if I were you I would look into installing a cooler on your truck and keeping the stock turbo for now, or do like I did and hold out and get the H2E kit with cooler tubes and install the turbo and cooler at the same time. Big $$ though.
Definately get the TW chip and see where you are at then post back. TW can lower egt's as well as give you more boost and HP all at the same time.
Economy- hardly ever use
High idle- sometimes use ~1150 RPM (wish it was 1400-1500 RPM)
Light tow- absolutely never use
Heavy tow- use quite a bit but ony when towing the 5er
Hi HP- use daily all the time
Extreme HP- Use every now and then for fun and showing off
If I were to do it again I wouldn't get the light tow. I would also add some more HP settings.
If I take it easy in the hi HP I get the same mileage as the economy on the high way.
The economy is nice to have because it doesn't smoke and gives good HP, well fair.
