As some of you know, I've been using the cheap-o see-through Fram for my pre-pump. Well, I was at Napa today and found something really cool. This one was a little more expensive ($13.99), but comes apart (notice the hex part molded into each end), and the internal filters are replaceable. I think it was $8.49 for 3 filters. I didn't buy any replacements yet, but I thought you all might like to have a look. Since I never plan on getting rid of the stock filter bowl, I don't need the high-end filter at the pre-pump. I believe this one is a nice option and good enough for the job.
I left my keys there so you can get an idea of the size. It's a 3/8ths nipple for both inlet & outlet:
i had one of those my toy truck (460 f250) and the threads on that one was bad about strippin after changing the little filter inside and it came apart on me one day. i bought that at like auto zone so this napa may be better quality just going to throw that out there
I use one on the 460 in my 54 F250 and also on the 400 in my 78 Bronco that has an edlebrock intake and carb. The Bronco is used mostly for off roading and rock crawling and gets bounced around pretty bad and so far haven't had any problems with it.
For what it is worth I had one of those on a small block hot rod Mustang that broke at the center when I had pulled into a gas station behind some friends, thank God I had just pulled off the freeway. The center bolt on those things is cast aluminum (pot metal) and upon inspection mine had an air bubble in it that lead to its failure. I will never run one again because of the cheap quality that they are. Even my worst beater vehicle is worth more to me than that filter in the event of a failure and who knows what next. Just thought I would share because I would hate to read that one of the Brotherhood lost his truck to fire, spin out on fuel or something else due to one of those fliters failing.
