First off, Merry Christmas! Secondly, I need some help with my 4 wheel drive on my '98 Expy with auto tranny. I've never used the 4 wheel drive before, but with the snow today I'm going to try it. I have read the manual, but I'm more confused than before! Putting it into and out of gear has me a bit befuddled??? How to I engage the 4 wheel drive? Do I put it in neutral first and then turn the selector switch?
Any help (step by step instructions?) would be appreciated.
You can just flip the switch while driving into 4HI. You only need to stop and put it in neutral to shift into 4Lo. But going into 4HI you can shift into it anytime at up to around 60MPH. Hope that helps ya.

Okay, I think I've got it, is this right?:
1) I can shift into 4HI "on the fly", at a reasonable speed of
course.
2) To shift into 4LO I stop, put it in neutral, turn the switch to
4LO. Does this engage the 4LO right away, or do I have to put it
back into Drive to make it engage?
I believe it may take second or so for the 4Lo to kick in. My truck isn't 4WD so I wouldn't know. But, I've heard people talk about that you can hear it or feel it when it goes into 4Lo. Just wait until you feel it to drive away.
Yes. It takes a few seconds to engage. It sometimes makes a "clunk" sound. The word "Lo" lights up on the dash next to "4x4". That's it. Put it into drive and go (only for off roading or where a lot of torque is needed. My manual recommends not driving above 35 mph in 4Lo.
