Strange noise under load??

I towed my camper for the first time for a long distance and when going up hills I noticed a ticking type noise. I didnt notice this when I started out, but the truck was under a heavy load with the camper weighing somewhere in the 6800# range. I towed over the green mountains of Vermont and the truck was pretty tired by the time we reached our destination in New Hampshire. When I unloaded the trailer and went down the highway and that is when I first noticed it. The next day it seemed to be gone, then when we headed for home it was doing it again. I seemed to have plenty of power but the noise did not sound too good. It seems to only do it when I was speeding up to go up a hill. Also should you tow with overdrive on or off, because it seems to tow better with it on, not always shifting up and down. Any thoughts?

Should always tow with it off, OD will kill a tranny when towing. what kind of noise did you hear, ticking? could be cam phazers after the engine gets hot. Could also be chain tensioners leaking and the chain flapping around inside the front cover.

I don't know what the noise is I was wondering if a spark plug was loose or something, but I probably would not have made it all the way home without spitting it out. next thought was cam phazers. Truck will have to the get once over at the shop I think.

with that heavy of a load and hills definately tow with it off, your transmission runs much much cooler, even if you do have to burn a bit more fuel. My buddy has a aftermarket tranny temp uage on his truck i forget the numbers but its was significantly cooler

Your signature shows that you have a edge, what tune are you using when you are towing that kind of weight?

The noise may be the IWE's trying to engage too. Any time someone hears a noise under low intake manifold vacuum conditions, it's the first thing I think of after having experienced it myself.

If you hear it again and are going straight down the road, try flipping it into 4wd briefly and see if the noise disappears.

The travel trailer and all our gear weighs in at about 6800 pounds. I have the Edge on level 2. I drove the truck breifly tonight and the noise was still there. It seems most noticeable when going around 50 mph when the rpms are low then when I speed up from there it sounds like a putt, putt, putt kind of sound, funny because it seems to come and go but is definetely there under the mentioned conditions. This ahs me very nervous because I can't really afford a large repair bill at the present time but also don't want to let it go and have something fail. I was thinking maybe it was an exhaust leak somewhere in the front like from a header or something. Or maybe an exhaust valve. You may be able to tell I am not that handy when it comes to this stuff. On a side note I had upgraded my tranny cooler to the HD cooler since my truck did not come with a tow package, but still saw the tranny temp over 200 degrees when ascending a long mountain pass. It was only for a breif time when we got to the peak but still had me pretty nervous. I wonder if this is normal under a heavy load for a prolonged period of time.

Turns out the problem is a crack in the passenger side manifold, seems like a common problem. Truck has 37500 miles just figures don't it. I called Ford and got nowhere. Local mechanic can fix it for 650.00, but says the other side is probably not far from failing. Truck needs new tires as well, thinking it may be time to trade er in.

ahh dont trade her in. Give her some nice headers and be done with it. 37500 that thing will run much longer and tires are just a common replacement. The headers should probably help with the towing as well and add a little grunt
