Hello Ford Truck Owners,
I just joined this forum and am following the guides about "introducing" myself to the forum.
I am retired and own a 2001 F350 with V10, 3.73 ratio, 2WD, US Gear Underdrive, truck to pull an 11-12K Sea Breeze Fifthwheel. I added the underdrive to solve a lack of gear choices for going up and down hills out here in southern Oregon. I am happy with it except for its excessive noise.
We towed our trailer to Rutland, Vermont from Oregon this spring/summer and left it there for the summer. We are flying back to bring it home this fall. The equipment performed fine except our truck has a very hard ride when not pulling. We averaged about 7-8 mpg(towing) from Oregon to Reno and then averaged 9 or a little better(towing) for the rest of the trip. We get 12-15 when not towing. Not complaining - just telling you. I think maybe gasoline was handier to purchase than diesel sometimes as we pulled into some stations that did not sell diesel.
My objective on the way back is to improve the truck's ride when we are just touring around empty. I carry a compressor and let the lower the pressure to 50LBs but I read a thread where the trucker lowers his to 35LBs. I am also going to shop for some softer sided E-rated LT tires.
