wow $2800 for a rebuild is ridiculous, even with the billet converter. a guy about an hour from me does all my transmission work, he has his own shop and is a automatic transmission genius. here's his prices $250 R&R, $600 for the transmission overhaul (that includes all the free easy upgrades case and valve body are modified for better lubrication, extra clutches in the 3rd gear drum, more aggressive accumulator spring, and some other stuff he showed me that are flaws in the stock ford e4od transmission) single disc billet converter $350 ( double disc is $600) plus any hard parts. i had my 95 done and it was around $1580 total, that included a few small hard parts that were bad. the shifts are not neck snapping but they are firm. that was 2 years ago and 35,000 miles and it has performed flawlessly. that price included the whole job i dropped the truck off and picked it up- when it was done. very professional too his shop is spotless and well organized not a back yard job bye any means. good luck.
no noises or anything, the OD light just stated flashing then it kicked into the fail safe mode.
Mine did the samething, keep it cool and granny on your take offs. Mine lasted a week and 1/2 after what you described. If you replace trash the cooler and install a heavy duty cooler and a mutiplate clutch when heavy duty TC. The old cooler can not be salvaged.
