Well after having the transmission error code read at the local transmission shope it is official and my torque converter is going out.
Now what exactly is it doing when it is going out? This is my daily driver and I kinda need to get to work so is it something that I can drive a little? The transmision shop quoted me $2800 to do the tranny rebuild with a new heavy duty torque converter, does this sound reasonable?
Yes it does. Mine was 3000 dollars. Get the better TQ, and a transgo shift kit if they will do it. There is a set of planetery gears in the back of the tranny that are in an aluminium housing. Get the steel replacement set of gears too. I also went with synthetic fluid too.
it is shifting hard from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd but I think that is the mode it gets kicked into when the tranny error happens. It didn't start shifting hard until the error happened.

Is the o/d light on the shifter flashing? What about the ABS light on the dash, is it on? Is the speedometer acting funny at all?
You can usually drive for quite a while without hurting anything that isn't already bad. What usually happens with those torque converters is the apply piston for the torque converter clutch cracks. When it cracks pressure that should be applying the clutch leaks past the piston so that the clutch slips. The crack will continue spreading so that you will set the code more often.
What will help is to turn off the overdrive if you're below about 50 MPH. The damaged clutch doesn't have to work as hard in 3rd as it does in overdrive.
