Got the truck back yesterday. I ended up going to Conkle's Truck Repair in Etna, Ohio. They seemed to have done a great job but hopefully nothing else comes up. Here was the prognosis from them:
CHECKED OUT ENGINE CODES. HAD TO CHARGE BATTERIES WERE ALMOST DEAD. HAD VERY LITTLE FUEL IN THE FILTER HOUSING. REMOVED FILTER AND FOUND WATER IN HOUSING. TURNED IGN KEY TO RUN FUEL PUMP WAS PUSHING AIR THRU LINE. FUEL GAUGE READS FUEL BUT HAD NO FUEL IN TANK. PUT 5 GALLONS OF FUEL IN TANK AND CLEANED FILTER HOUSING. INSTALLATION OF POLAR GUARD TO TANK TO GET RID OF WATER IN FUEL. ENGINE STARTED AND RAN. TEST DROVE. RUNS NORMAL NOW.
PAID $235.91
Everything is fine so far. Will be pulling tank again to attempt to fix the float on the sender. So we'll see what happens now.
I pulled the tank today. Pulled the whole sending unit out. Put the float back on the way according to "Guzzle". Moved the float a bit out of the tank and it would register on the gauge. Put everything back together still registers full. Went and put about 15 gallons in it and still it registers full. It definitely is not full. What do I have to do to reset the unit???? I'm so frustrated right now and any help would be great
Do you think it's possible that the float is "stuck" in the full position. I've read a few posts where people have had their float stuck. I'm going to take a rubber hammer to the tank and go offroading a little bit to see if I can unstick the float.
Best thing to do is ohm things out. Pull the float, ohm it in the empty position and full position. I agree with Kwikkordead, ohm the lines and the float.
I got the float stuck at full once. Did a boost launch with 3/4 tank of fuel. The float wedged itself against the top of the tank. You said you pulled the unit out since having it repaired, so its not stuck like mine was. Did the float arm move up and down freely? If it did, either there's a loose wire somewhere or the sending unit for the float is bad.
I think "Full" means a short in the wiring. Either the sender is indeed screwed up, or you have a short. Mine occasionally drops to "E" when it's completely full. I think the sender is getting tired, but I also fill it to the neck every time now. It goes all the way up much further than it used to. And it ONLY does it when it's completely full. After a few miles, it goes back to normal.
I will test the wiring. I just ordered this kit from Diesel Innovations: http://67.19.132.3/dieselinnovations...cts&product=28 Basically a fancy "hutch" mod. I'm sick of dealing with this mixing chamber. I have a feeling that the fuel sender is bad so if anyone has one laying around PLEASE let me know.
