Cycled the pump for 25 seconds and did it 5 times. Cranked it for 10 seconds and nothing. Let it rest for 2 minutes and cranked again still nothing. Popped the hood and opened the drain and there was a steady flow of fuel..???
When I put gas in my truck I had to blow the gas out of the fuel rails. To do so I rev'd it up to about 1500 to 2000 rpm. That was enough to get the majority of the gas out of the fuel rails. After that I just drove it around and all the gas was gone within about a mile. No more smoke and it ran fine.
The same should be for air in the rails.
How steady was the flow of fuel? Try checking the drain valve with the key on so you get a good stream under pressure.
If it's air in the rails, there is a plug on the inboard side of each fuel rail that you can loosen to bleed the air, or just use repeated cranking to get it fired up. Air in the rails will cause the truck to run rough. I'd add some fuel additive to help with lubricity, then you'll just need to drive it around to work the rest of the air out.
I can't even get it to start right now. It will crank and crank and hiccup and act like it will start but nothing. I'm going to try to add another 10 gallons of fuel to the tank and see if that will help me get my prime. What I don't understand is why there is fuel in the fuel bowl and there is a steady steam coming out but no start...????
I've tried starting it up 3 times now each time letting the fuel pump cycle 4 times for 25 seconds w/ no luck. I'm getting a little smoke but it is still not firing. I also tried having the pedal to the floor as countrycar suggested but no luck. If I have fuel in the fuel bowl shouldn't the truck be able to start at least until the fuel in the fuel bowl is burned??? I'm a little weary about putting more fuel in the tank because I don't really want to be pumping it out if I have to pull the tank again so I will add another 10 gallons as a last resort or if you guys really think that is the problem.
The fuel system only primes itself to the resevoir, after that, it takes a trip to the fuel rail milled in the heads and has no escape except through the injectors, or if you loosen the plug on the other end of the rail to bleed air. Just something for the others to chime in on, if he ran the gas low and had trash could his inlet screens on the head be clogged, or maybe something in the filer bowl? Like the filter, or the center inlet the filter sits over? I guess the question becomes does the drain take fuel from the filtered or unfiltered side? Best thing to check at this point is pull the rail plugs opposite the rail inlets and see how your fuel flow is. It will bleed air out of the rails as well, and probably be messy. the plugs look like 1/8 pipe thread plugs and are near your intake plenums on the heads. Mine have square heads that a crescent wrench will grab. The passenger side is at the front of the motor, and the driver side is at the rear, assuming you have stock fuel system.
Definitely sounds like a lack of fuel or lack of firing injectors.
Fuel pressure needs to be measured after the fuel bowl.
Injector buzz test needs to be conducted to be sure the injectors are firing or at least trying to
HPOP pressure needs to be measured
Without these 3 things you can not get fuel into the cylinders. Check them and let's see what we have going on.
As a side note.....
If there is ANYONE in or around Rural Central Ohio then this young man needs some FTE love. If I was near by I'd give you a hand but I'm about 24 to 36 hours away from you and can't afford the trip.
Okay here's a little update:
Batteries - OK
Fuel Filter - OK
CPS - Swapped it out for a spare I had laying around and that turned out OK
I pulled the fuel line off right before the fuel pump and drips came out. I'm going to try shooting a little 60 psi towards the tank and see if that frees up anything. If it does I will have to pull the tank again. I'm sick of these prefilters clogging up. Can I just eliminate them from the canister and close it up or do I have to do anything else?
