Explorer Stalls

4.0L won't idle. Have to keep revs up to keep it running. Garage has ruled out Catalytic converter, bad gas, fuel pressure but it still won't idle. Codes say multiple cyclinder misfire.

Any ideas?

Do the codes show misfires on multiple cylinders, or does it have a single "random misfire" code of P0300? Generally, it's helpful to provide the specific code number rather than someone's interpretation of the code. Also, what year is your Explorer? The P0300 format is only valid if the Explorer is newer than a 1996.

Check the vacuum lines at the vacuum tree by the firewall drivers side. What year is it?

Just got the vehicle (2003 Explorer) back from garage. What they found was a hole melted into the intake manifold near what they tell me is a return tube from the EGR? The manifold was then replaced and the vehicle runs OK but still starved for power. Can cruise along at 60mph but loses steam on grades and no response other than high RPMs when I kick it down. The garage did say that they noted a high temperature at one of the catalytic converters indicating a restriction.

Next stop is the Ford dealer to get a definitive on this. I'm hopeful that the emissions warranty will kick in.

1996 Ford Explorer V6 4.0L doing something similar, has me stumped. Truck sometimes gives me trouble starting and when it starts runs rough. When I press the accelerator to the floor the truck bogs down. The truck doesnt want to accererate it has no power until it kicks into 2nd gear but you can still feel the shudder of the engine. I ran to Auto Zone and had them run a code came back single cynlider miss fire #1. Doesnt do this all the time. The Check engine light came on and I reset it hoping that I could recal the fuel system. Engine sounds like it is either getting too much air or not enough gas?
Any help out there?

Sounds like a misfire, and the code would suggest the misfire is cylinder #1. When is the last time the Explorer had a tune up consisting of filters, spark plugs, and spark plug wires? It could also be a coil or fuel injector, but if it's been awhile since the last tune up, or at least since the plug wires were changed, then they are likely due to be replaced anyway and may just fix your misfire.

happened to me one time, would run smooth as long as i held the gas but would stall out without being on the pedal. Long story short it was towed to the dealership and they replace the Mass Air Flow Sensor and it has been fine since.
Just my experience, good luck

The MAP sensor stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure, but I believe instead of a MAP your 2003 will have a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. It will be located between the air filter and the throttle plate.

I'm not sure on the V6, but your 2003 may have Coil on Plug so you won't need to change out the spark plug wires.

Case Closed - Almost

Well finally the garage found it - a two part problem. A catalytic converter issue was suspected so they dropped the exhaust but it still would not idle. Source was found to be a hole burned into the intake manifold (how did that happen - hmmm?). Manifold replaced and codes cleared. They returned the vehicle to me but it still had nowhere near the power it should - 60mph max on flat ground!! Catalytic converter found to be indeed the trouble. Replaced under the 8yr/130,000km emissions warranty (would have been $3,250.00 CAD otherwise yikes!). Now I have to convince Ford that the manifold burn was caused by hot exhaust from the blocked converter hoping they honor those initial repairs as well. Fingers crossed.
