1976 F150 with a 390. Has a new carb, Eddelbrok starts but won't keep running. If you play with gas or choke is on it will keep running, as soon as you let off it dies.
This may sound elementary, but have you tried adjusting the idle speed?
How about the idle mixture?
Have you checked for vacuum leaks?
If it wants to keep running with the choke "on" it could be the idle mixture is too lean or possibly vacuum leaks.
Sounds like some carb tuning needs to be done.
What is a good way to check for vacuum leaks I'm leaning towards that, because how sudden this came on. Ran great been driving daily for weeks. Drive Saturday morn then this started Sat. afternoon.
Get a can of starting fluid. With the engine idling (try to keep it idling), spray the starting fluid around the base of the carb, along the edges of the intake manifold along all the vacuum lines. If the idle smooths out or it starts to idle okay, you've found a leak.
About the only two leaks this won't detect are a leaking power brake booster and, if you have factory air, leaks in the a/c control system.
You can also use something like WD-40.
