I caught a reply to one of my posts about learning to rebuild the e4od out of a 93 bronco... and ludis mentioned a tool kit that can be bought to work on these bad boys... he said he's seen them on e-bay.. I looked and no good... anyone know where else I can get one of those, and maybe a shop manual too??
I figure with the right tools and the right books, it shouldn't be too hard.
Search the EBay completed items for "E4OD" (E4ohD). It might be useful to also search for "E40D" (E4zeroD). I think an E4OD tool kit sold in the last month. Since late summer, I've seen three kits sell. There aren't any up for auction currently. This tool kit contains just the "T89T" prefix tools. There are plenty of other (more generic) tools needed.
There is a big tool kit for the Lincoln Navigator that also includes the E4OD tools - so keep your eyes open and read the item descriptions. The two keywords that seem to pull up all the Ford tool kits are Ford and Rotunda.
If you are willing to pay a premium price for new tools, look on spxotc.com. That's the company that makes the Ford special tools. Sometime in the last few years, they changed the tool numbering so that the numbers no longer match the tools called out for in the older shop manuals.
so hwo much am I really looking at? and by generic tools what are we reffering to? torque wrenchs or somthing more... I have a good friend with an entire shop.. are there more generic transmission tools? or like sockets and stuff??
I'm gonna go look on e-bay now, but what can I expect to actually pay for things like this.. and of course the age old question can this be done without the tools??
and of course... thanks for all the help man.. this was a mjor find for me!
The E4OD tool kit gets you (I think) 7 of the 38 special tools listed in the '89 shop manual. The Navigator tool kit gets you 6 of them.
Standard tools like sockets and wrenches aren't listed in the "special" tool lists. Torx bits, slide hammers, pullers, dial indicators, and so on are.
You won't need _all_ 38 of the special tools. Some are for testing only. Others should have generic automatic transmission service equivalents. If you friend has a shop that can rebuild a C6, then he probably has those tools.
Sorry for taking so long to respond. I just discovered that I have to turn Javascript off to post - 'cause the "post a reply" page's script is broken. Lets hope my work around keeps working.
There's an T98T-1000-LM-1 tool kit for sale right now on EBay. The auction ends in little more than a day. Even though the seller doesn't mention the E4OD, this (currently @ $33) kit includes all the tools that are in the E4OD kit (sold previously @ $250) except for one. Hint. Hint.
