'98 econoline had moved on to the mod (triton) motor, this will not fit a 351w. Ford never made a 5.7, options for '98 vans were 4.6, 5.4 or 6.8 (v10).

Ford did make E4OD's that will fit your 351w, any 300, 302 or 351w from a 1987-1996 econoline or f150 and 87-97 f250 or f350 will fit.

it could have been a 7.5l and he just mixed it up when he told me. if thats the case it would work with a 93 460 then right? anyway to tell just by looking at the transmission?

The trans part is easy (sort of) but you MUST have the factory processor or a aftermarket trans controller (US Shift/Bauman) to run it on one of our older trucks, then you add a TPS sensor to the carb (Holley Makes one) RPM signal and a Vehicle Speed Sensor, they work well, they are expensive.
Or you can sort out the factory ECU and loom, if you do that you may just fuel inject the truck.

I was going to do the swap but I would have to shorten or change the front gas tank (E4OD is longer) so I went with the 1st and 2nd gear out of a E4OD in my C6 to give it a wide ratio instead.

Do you have any links as to exactly what parts i should use?

It will eventually be fuel injected, so i might go that route

The US Shift Transmission Control System

They have everything to control the trans and the TPS kit, it's a easy but expensive way to have a overdrive.

The best year is 97, that E4OD has all the best upgraded internals, but if you want to keep your cable driven speedometer you have to get the early output shaft 92 I think and some of the tailhousings up to 96 have a plug in the speedo hole but not all, some have no hole, I would get the loom and computer from the same year as the trans.
