I have a 1992 E250 with the 5.8L V8. The van has about 125,000 miles. The transmission "chatters" ( slips?) when accelerating, even slightly, under any load, such as entering the freeway on a slight uphill ramp. Is it likely that the transmission is " shot" and will require a complete rebuild? Is the rebuild difficult to do? What transmissions from later vans and trucks are "drop in" replacements, and which ones would anyone recommend?
You are experiencing what called torque converter shudder. Inside your tourque converter there is a chutch that aplies, In time they heat check what you're feeling is the clutch going hit, slip, hit, slip
It slips every time it hits a checked spot. causing "The chatter"
It most likely is torque converter clutch shudder.
The fix is a complete transmission fluid change. Shudder is caused by old fluid that has changed it's frictional properties. A complete fluid change, not just what's in the pan, almost always fixes this.
I also have a 93 E-250 Van and it has the inline 6 in it. Hence the 280,000 miles on it LOL. My transmission is a rebuilt Jasper transmission with about 80,000 miles on it I was told when I bought the van. Well to make a long story short, when I got the van I dropped the trans pan and put a new filter and gasket on it. I also put new fluid in the pan. Well about 6 monthes later it started making those chatter noises when I am driving and also when it is being backed up it goes something like chatter chatter chatter chatter until you finally back up. Also I have to start out in 2nd gear because my van wont shift to 1st unless you take your foot off the gas when it is about to shift. Sometimes that doesnt even help. My buddy told me that there is some parts in the pan that need to be replaced to fix the shifting problem. He was saying he thought the clatter was coming from the torque plate that goes on back of the torque convertor that maybe it is cracked? I want to know what you guys think about it. I would like to fix it without having to do a whole lot of work to it A.K.A MONEY. But just wanted to know what you think it is. Thanks
