I have a 1992 E350 van with the 460 CI motor. We just returned from a race pulling a box trailor. No problems during the trip. When we got home and were backing the van into the driveway the transmission started making a noise like vacuum leak. After several minutes transmission fluid was leaking out of the rubber inspection plug located on the bell housing. The transmission still works fine. Any suggestions as to the problem? Thanks
Actually, it sounds more like you got it hot on the way home. Most likely it started the front seal leak on the trip home and only showed when you were manuvering slowly. It took a little time to collect enough fluid in the bell housing before it would leak noticably out the plug.
Remove the rubber plug and go drive it and inspect for more leaking. Towing a heavy trailer will run the trans hot and cause a front seal leak.
I agree with the above posts. If I where you, I wouldn't ow any heavy trailers with any vehicle unless I had a heavy duty transmission cooler. I want to install a new cooler on our '92 Superclubwagon, and install a transmission temperature guage.
Logging in for gt5-33...........drove the van, and all is well. I will have the system transfused with new oil and install a larger oil cooler. It seems that it got warm on the way home (about 3-5 hours) and then stopped and started backing in and out of the driveway to park the trailer. That is when the oil leaked. I live very close to the highway so it had little time to cool before the trailer parking. I checked the codes and there were none or 111
Thanks guys, you saved me a tow and possible over charge on service.
